This year, World Earth Day’s theme is “Planet vs Plastic” to bring attention to the serious issue of plastic pollution and how it harms nature.

Plastic is a central component of our life — it helps us preserve food, insulate constructions, use electronics, and more. Driven by economic growth, plastic production hit 441 million tons of plastic in 2022, compared to 2 million in 1950. Despite all the benefits, plastic seriously harms the environment when disposed:

  • 9% is recycled
  • 12% is incinerated
  • 79% is disposed in landfills or the natural environment

Derived from petroleum, plastics are non-biodegradable and persist in natural environments: when they decompose, they create micro-plastics that harm the environment, wildlife, and human health.

At Blue Vision Capital , we invest in innovative and disruptive climate tech startups to shape a better future for all. Our commitment to preserving the Planet is strong, and we only support startups that help reduce global GHG emissions.

This year, our team did a clean-up session in the most popular park of Montreal. Although it seemed clean, most plastics found were small pieces left by park visitors and were hidden between grass leaves and buried in the soil. Let’s all take action to protect and preserve our planet — it is a global responsibility.
